Our Mission
The mission of the Atlanta Preservation Center is to promote the preservation of Atlanta’s architecturally, historically and culturally significant buildings, neighborhoods and landscapes through education and advocacy.
Some Highlights of Our History
1979Atlanta Preservation Center FoundedThe Atlanta Preservation Center (APC) begins operation; opening its first office in the Healey Building, before moving to the Flatiron Building in 1985.
- Easements Atlanta, Inc. Founded1984
Established in 1984, Easements Atlanta is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit created through an alliance between the Atlanta Preservation Center, Atlanta History Center, and the City of Atlanta Urban Design Commission. Today, Easements Atlanta permanently protects and stewards over 40 historic properties across the City of Atlanta.
- 1988Preservation Program Created
Assists in developing and obtaining funding for Atlanta's Comprehensive Preservation Program for historic districts — signed into law in 1988.
- Purchases 1856 L.P. Grant Mansion2001
Purchases 1856 Lemuel Pratt Grant Mansion, deemed “Atlanta’s most historic building” by Franklin Garrett, to prevent its destruction. Embarks on long-term restoration efforts.
- 2002Prevents Demolition in MLK Historic District
Works to prevent demolition of a block of Auburn Avenue located in the M.L. King Jr. Historic District.
- Creates The Phoenix Flies Preservation Celebration2003
Creates The Phoenix Flies preservation monthlong celebration in 2003 — which has grown to include over 100 free tours and lectures offered every March all across Atlanta.
- 2023Awarded Federal Grant for English Avenue School
APC was awarded a 500k federal grant to fund emergency maintenance of one of the city's oldest school buildings on English Avenue.
